RELATIVE ADOPTION

Relative Adoption

Sometimes birth parents are unwilling or unable to perform their parental obligations for the care and support of their child. This may be due to economic hardship, incarceration, physical illness or disability, mental illness or instability, or some other circumstance or impairment. In such cases, a relative, such as a grandparent, uncle or aunt, may step in and offer to adopt the child.

When both birth parents are willing to surrender their parental rights, adoption by a relative is typically a straightforward process. In cases where one or both birth parents do not surrender their rights, it is sometimes possible to terminate their rights without their voluntary surrender.
